Statistics And Results From Ultiworld’s Bracket Challenge

Doublewide, Revolver, Fury, Riot, Blackbird, Polar Bears, scores and predictions

Sunday saw the 2012 USAU Club Champions crowned amidst heavy winds and fierce competition. Those were not the only winners announced though. With all the final scores in, Ultiworld published the final standings to our Bracket Challenge.

Overall Winner:

  1. Marcel Frenette-Corniellis 448

Open Winners:

  1. J. Yeager 174
  2. Honna Park 167
  3. Andrew Bunn 166

Women’s Winners:

  1. Justin Allison 162
  2. Marc Roberts 160
  3. DougC *158

Mixed Winners:

  1. Austin Weaver 142
  2. Rahil Suleman 139
  3. Jeremiah Webster 139

Now that the contest has concluded, we thought it would be interesting to look back at people’s picks in aggregate.

How many people picked the final winners?

  • 3% chose Austin’s Doublewide to win the Open Division
  • 92% chose San Francisco’s Fury to win the Women’s Division
  • 0% chose San Francisco’s Blackbird to win the Mixed Division

It was exceptionally surprising that not a single person picked Blackbird to win, despite coming in as the incumbent champions. An inconsistent regular season in addition to a 4th place finish at Regionals led to an 11th seed in Sarasota and it looks like that signaling caused everyone to underestimate their strength once again.

Were people better at picking a bracket that performed better than USAU’s original seedings?

  • The seedings-based bracket scored 392.
  • The average submitted bracket scored 386.
  • The worst bracket scored 221.
  • The best bracket scored 448.

Nationals has always been a difficult tournament to predict: two rounds of pool play, a round of crossover games, concluded by a final round of elimination. This reflected itself in the final leaderboards: the average score of submitted brackets was actually marginally less than the score that you would have received if you made picks in the same order as USAU’s seedings and the final bracket scores ranged from significantly below to significantly above the average.

Some other interesting facts:

  • 72% picked Boston’s Ironside to win Open. They were eliminated in the semifinals by Doublewide.
  • 83% predicted Boston’s The Ghosts to make it to the finals. They were eliminated in the quarterfinals by Polar Bears.
  • Ultiworld’s staff final scores: Wesley Cronk – 399, Charlie Eisenhood – 376, Dan Berk – 366.
