As we announced on Deep Look this week, Ultiworld is excited to be partnering with Ultiapps, a new free statistics tracking application for iPhone/iPad and Android.
To begin our NexGen statistics project, we built a prototype application that allowed us to track the movement of the disc on the field as well as keeping more well-known stats like touches, goals, assists, etc. As we realized the power and the importance of measuring the game spatially (which allowed us to track yardage, clearly an important piece of understanding Ultimate), we began thinking about ways to develop our application into something we could share with teams looking to keep meaningful statistics.
In Sarasota at the USA Ultimate Club Championships, we bumped into Mathew Berg, the creator of Ultiapps, who demoed his stats tracking application. We were stunned. Completely separate from our efforts, he had created a user-friendly, streamlined version of our app.
“The Ultiapps application allows users to quickly capture game data as well as extract relevant results,” said Tushar Singh, an Ultiapps co-developer. “With real-time data entry from the sideline, stands, or even at home, no other app captures as much information as quickly. The raw data that is captured is presented both visually as well as numerically — but that’s not the end of the story. By looking at specific stats Ultiworld can develop a more accurate model of what matters to your team. With Ultiworld being at the forefront of analysis we’re excited about our partnership as well as improving results for teams.”
So what does this mean for you and your team? If you begin recording your team’s statistics with Ultiapps, you will have an opportunity to get cutting-edge insight and analysis about your team’s performance on the field.
Discover who your most efficient players are. See who really runs your offense. Look at a map of the field that shows you the areas you are struggling in. Watch where the disc is moving on the field with innovative heat maps. See how you stack up against other teams. And, of course, get detailed individual player statistics (check out what we have for Dylan Freechild).
“With this partnership, we are going to be able to work with teams to give them the type of analysis that you are seeing on our website,” said Sean Childers, Ultiworld’s statistics editor. “We can tell you about your player strengths and weaknesses and what the data is saying. There’s a lot of exciting directions to go with that.”
So how can you get started? Download the app! It’s free in the Apple and Android app stores.
“I think this change and this revolution is coming,” said Childers. “The number one thing as a college captain that I would suggest to you is to get involved in this game and start recording stats at your games, in your scrimmages, and when you’re at tournaments.”
There is a bit of a learning curve to the program. You’ll need to practice with the app to get used to it and how to optimize your input time. What we’ve found is that after a couple of practice games, coding in real time is entirely possible. And the Ultiapps developers are committed to improving the app, so don’t hesitate to give feedback.
We will be using the application in select games at college tournaments around the country this season to provide high-level insight into game results. Find us at a tournament and check it out!
