BOSTON — Round one at the New England Open featured 1 v. 5 and 2 v. 4 matchups. Consistent with the fairly large dropoff between the top two seeds in each pool and the rest of the field, there were no upsets.
Connecticut had a tough time against regional rival Rutgers, who took them to double game point before losing 15-14.
Bentley, the country’s top ranked DIII team by USA Ultimate, was sluggish early against Middlebury, a team they’ve had close games against already this season. Middlebury took half up a break, 7-5. After they also scored coming out of the half, Bentley took a timeout and their captain didn’t mince words, trying to fire up their defense.
It worked. Bentley outscored Middlebury 7-3 from that point forward to take the win 13-11.
None of the other games was close.
Because of a tight filming schedule, we didn’t get a chance to post updates by round. Check back for a Saturday recap later this evening.
