League sources confirmed rumors that the event would be pushed back a week.
“The MLU Championship has officially been moved to July 19th at 6pm at PPL Park in Chester, PA,” a team official with knowledge of the situation told Ultiworld.
PPL Park is the home of the Philadelphia Union, the Major League Soccer franchise. The MLU Championship was originally scheduled to be played at Franklin Field. PPL Park holds 18,500 people.
The move also averts a potential conflict with USA Ultimate’s Pro-Elite Challenge, which is scheduled for the weekend of July 12 and 13th. Both the DC Current and New York Rumble would have had significant player conflicts if they were to have made the finals.
Earlier, MLU Commissioner Jeff Snader and VP Nic Darling took to a podcast to implore USA Ultimate to shift the dates of the Pro-Elite Challenge in order to avoid the scheduling conflict. Snader even contacted the local tournament directors, who confirmed they could move it to later in the summer. USA Ultimate does not appear to have considered making the change.
MLU officials declined to comment for the story.
An earlier version of this story said that the Pro-Elite Challenge tournament directors could move their tournament to the 19th. That is incorrect. They could have moved it to a date later in the summer.
