Brief Weekend Recap: Fall Easterns (Open)

It was a quiet weekend in college ultimate, but at least one (later atoned) upset turned some heads at fall Easterns.

Winter is coming.

But words are wind. Staving off the cold for one more weekend, 12 College Open teams took the field at Fall Easterns, hosted by 2014-semifinalist UNC-Wilmington. Without reading too much into fall results, events seemed to have gone as much to chalk as one could have expected. UNC Darkside walked away with the title on the weekend after a 14-3 drubbing of Cincinatti.

Darkside and UNC-W Seamen sat atop their respective pools at the beginning of play Saturday, and would go on to finish 4-1 and 5-0 respectively. Both teams would tally only one loss overall on the weekend. Outside those losses, neither team finished the weekend allowing more than 10 points scored against in a single game.

Only the slightest of wrinkles shifted the bracket for Sunday. UNC Darkside’s 10-15 loss to Cincinnati on Saturday landed them on the same side as the Seamen, which set up the 2014 College Open semifinals rematch a round earlier than expected. The loss also allowed both Maryland and Cincinnati a look at a finals berth unencumbered by either North Carolina powerhouse.

Both Maryland and Cincinnati would finish the weekend strong at 5-2 and 6-2. The UMD Space Bastards were slated in the top four coming into the weekend and stayed that way. Cincinnati Cinister offered the real surprise, leaving behind their fourth seed in Pool A for a runner up finish on the weekend.

Also of note: Virginia Tech and North Carolina State, two teams that may lurk late into the Mid-Atlantic Regionals turned in solid performances, finishing 5th and 6th respectively.
