Should We Reduce The Number Of Games Played Per Day At Tournaments?

Jamie Nuwer, a long-time player and co-author of the recent ultimate injury study, was interviewed alongside lead author David Swedler about their study. When asked about injury prevention at tournaments, Nuwer said:

One thing I wish we had done was to ask the [survey participants] to report which game in the day the injury had occurred. Because I would say that 90 percent of the injuries are probably happening in game four or five of the day, because players are exhausted and doing stupid things. I would absolutely love for ultimate to go to two or three games a day, maximum. I think with all these overuse injuries, when you’re in a game, you’re going to push through your overuse injury. The saner we can make the sport, the better.

In order to do one-off games, you really would need paid travel. But if we made all tournaments three days, with a maximum of three games per day, I think we could actually do it. You could make it safer that way. That is something that would be potentially feasible for college students. It would just be really hard for coaches.
