India has been in the midst of a difficult situation with the World Flying Disc Federation. The organizing body recognized by WFDF, the Flying Disc Federation of India (FDFI), was not doing much of anything to get Indian national teams to major world tournaments or grow the sport domestically. After a long review process, WFDF has now revoked FDFI membership and granted membership to the Ultimate Players Association of India (UPAI).
“We are very excited that UPAI, with its strong competition program, solid ties to the global community, and a very active development program across India, has been approved by Congress for membership, and we welcome them into the WFDF family,” said WFDF President Nob Rauch in a statement.
This will mean little to those outside of India, but for players in the country, where ultimate has seen explosive growth over the past few years, it is a milestone. The UPAI has been far more active at home and abroad and should help to accelerate the growth in India for years to come.
